Return of the crop top? Yes, you read correctly, the “crop top” is back as a clothing staple for Spring/Summer 2011 and was even seen on Fall 2011 runways. Sounds a little scary at first I know – but before you go running into a world of tunic tops and over-sized oxford shirts, hear me out. This is not your bedazzled /beaded/ shredded top (often found in a Day-Glo color perhaps with a picture of a unicorn) of yesteryear. Furthermore you will not be wearing your belly-baring top with low-slung bottoms. When following proper modern day crop top etiquette: Navels need not apply! Actually, the amount of skin bared can be quite minimal and refined. Your look should never come across as too sexy or cheap.
If you fear this look because you don’t think you are “thin enough” – try it out before you discard it into your mental file of “things I cannot/should not wear” (for me shoulder-pads fall into that category – have you seen these shoulders? Already broad, no padding required!). This look can potentially be flattering on many shapes of women, first of all – the featured part of the midsection, is below the ribcage and above the navel, this is often the smallest part of our torso. Secondly, bringing the waist of the bottom up will make your legs appear longer! So… win, win!

See the photos above and below for some beautiful high-end examples. Study up, then if you are a budget-conscience shopper like me, run out to your local H&M, Forever 21 or Charlotte Russe and find one that works for you! Don’t forget about high-waist bottoms to complete the look. You may already have a few skirts in your repertoire that can be belted high enough to cover the navel– so take inventory before you head out on your hunt.
Photo/designer credits and my comments:
1. Top photo: Vena Cava Spring 2011 RTW - photo from http://www.style.com/ - I love the simplicity of the white top and black (rather conservative) skirt. The headscarf and bright lip add a punch of color. This is a very elegant presentation of a crop top.
2. Middle photo: Missoni (top and skirt) - photo from Elle March 2011 featuring Ana Beatriz, photographed by Max Farago and styled by Francesca Burns - This look is all about color and fun; it exudes summer! I would go merengue dancing in this belly-baring outfit by Missoni.
3. Last photo: Salvatore Ferragamo - Spring 2011 RTW - photo from http://www.style.com/ - This final look reminds me of the glamorous and bohemian clothing of the 1970's. Even so it has a very modern feel to it. Adding a belt is a great way to accentuate the smallest part of the waistline. Her long pendent necklaces help to draw the viewer's eye down to her bare (but not too bare!) midsection.
I mentioned that crop tops were also seen on the Fall 2011 runways, try out yours this summer, then come fall, throw a fitted blazer on top, pair with high-waist trousers and you'll be ready to go!
Until next time... I wish a very happy spring to my fellow fashion lovers!
Cheers, Rebecca :)
I love the maxi skirt from the last photo.
