The "Philophiles"

When Phoebe Philo left her gig in 2006 as Creative Director of Chloe to spend more time with her growing family, the fashion world mourned its loss.  When she returned in 2008 as Creative Director of Céline, a collective cheer resounded across the industry.

Phoebe Philo is a goddess.  Known as the woman who made Chloe "cool" again, since her debut as CD at Céline, she has created chic, sophisticated, "woman-friendly," clothes and accessories that have rocketed the brand to fashion royalty and made every fashion conscious girl out there swoon.

I've always had a maniacal penchant for handbags, so it's no surprise that Philo's pocketbooks have induced many crazed, near-stroke moments.  Such moments are, of course, courtesy of the sheer beauty of each design, but are also sadly brought on by the extremely high price tag attached to each little work of art.  So, for those of us who can't shell out a few G's for a Céline authentique, see below for comparable, cost-effective alternatives!

This Leather Two-Tone Shopper (below) from Topshop gives the same sophisticated simplicity of the "Boston Tote" and has a price tag of only $160!  The short handles allow you to carry it in the crook of your elbow and the adjustable body strap (a feature that the "Boston Tote" doesn't sport) lets you throw it over your shoulder.  Plus, camel/brown is the colour for fall, so if you've got this on your arm, you're good as gold.

Also from Topshop, this Hard Leather Shoulder Bag (right) could be your wallet-friendly alternative to the "Box Bag."  Retailing at only $80, this model maintains the vintage '70s feel and streamlined style.

At Piperlime we see another alternative to the "Boston Tote."  This cross-body bag (below right) comes in either taupe or light blue and is available online for only $60.99 (image via piperlime.com).  Reviews of this bag say that it is a younger/hippie-esque take on the
classic satchel, so if you're looking for a more casual feel - this one's for you.

Zara is one of my favourite stores to find in-style pieces at amazing price points!  This season they present us with their City Bag (left): a beautiful cross-body purse with a few added details.  The best part about it? The $69.90 price tag!  Another favourite is their Shoulder Bag with Gusset (right) (image via zara.com) which retails at only $10 more than the City Bag.

Different renditions and replicas of Céline's handbags will undoubtedly surface as they continue to be the it-bag of the season.  If you can't foot the bill for the real thing, check out your favourite budget-friendly boutiques for less expensive alternatives!

But of course, nothing beats the real deal, so if you're already set on Céline, I suggest you start saving!  (I know I am.)

xo,
SM
