The style icon Coco Chanel went against the grain in the early 1900’s by sporting trousers and boyish jackets instead of the ladylike corsets and full skirts that were in-vogue at the time. Today nearly anything goes as long as the wearer sports their menswear with confidence.

A multitude of design houses are featuring menswear-inspired clothing for Fall 2010. Some of my favorite looks are by uber-American designers Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs. From across the pond, Burberry Prorsum offers beautifully tailored menswear-for-women pieces in its Ready-To-Wear collection with a proper school-boy/military-inspired vibe.

To keep your menswear look fresh, I suggest mixing new with vintage. Also add something feminine like a touch of lace or ruffle, on a blouse for example. Jewelry reminds you and others that you are a girl, but should not be too precious or girly. Try layering varying lengths of pearls and gold chain necklaces over your crisp white shirt which is sharply tucked into wool trousers. Add a bold, engraved signet ring on your ring finger. An interesting brooch, again think classic or vintage, not overly feminine, can be pined to the lapel of your tweed blazer for a finishing touch.
The perfect shoe to polish off your look is a classic lace-up oxford. There are various options to select from whether your preference is high end, department store, or thrift.
Coats even have a masculine feel this year, pull your camel coat out from several seasons ago, the hue is back full force this year. Military-inspired outerwear is another on-trend option to finish your look and keep you warm throughout fall and winter.
Remember the look is menswear-inspired, not actual menswear. Blazers and trousers should be tailored to show your feminine curves. You should come across as smart and crisp not swimming and sloppy.
Most likely you already have some items in your closet that will work nicely when pulling your look together. The key pieces are a tweed blazer, a cuffed wool pant or slim fit trouser, crisp shirt or feminine blouse (for contrast), leather oxfords or riding boots, bold but classic looking jewelry, a leather belt (try wearing it over your blazer to create a feminine waistline) and a handsome leather bag.
The menswear-for-women trend can be quite versatile; you can wear it for work or play. If purchasing an investment piece, make sure it fits perfectly and is timeless in nature - that way you will look forward to pulling it out of your closet each and every year as the weather turns cooler!
Cheers, Rebecca
