That Seventies Swagger

There are many reasons that fashion critics and baby-boomers alike might name the 1970's as the worst fashion-era. Non-breathing double-knits, rainbows and cartoonish peace-signs as well as electric blue eye shadow and feathered hair are just a few of the non-desirable trends of the time period.

I agree that these specific trends were not so groovy, but even so, I have long been an admirer of 70’s clothing. If asked to describe the fashion of that time, a different, much more glamorous image comes to my mind.

A stark contrast from the more conservative 50’s and early 60’s – fashion in the 1970’s was eclectic, bohemian, luxurious, gilded, and fabulous. Think Studio 54, sequins, leather and silk. Prim and proper is out and sexy sophistication is in.

To complete your modern day 70’s look for fall and winter, look for items in rich hues such as burgundy, deep purple and gold as well as lots of neutrals. Start with a high-waist, wide leg trouser or jean; add a form-fitting turtle neck and high-heel leather boots or platform shoes. A wrap-style sweater in fair-isle print would be great for a cozy and casual look - try it over jeans or leggings.

Wrap dresses in sultry fabrics are great for evening. Ali MacGraw (above) wears hers with a deep "V" in the front, a funky chain belt and big hair.
I also like the cropped version below from http://www.victoriassecret.com/. Switching the "V" to the back is an unexpected and modern touch on the classic wrap-style dress. Plus the bold jewel-toned color will help you stand out in a sea of little black dresses.

Vintage or vintage-inspired gold jewelry (think layered chains and pendants, animal-themed label pins and big chunky rings) will add a bit of attitude and personalized flair.

To further accessorize your look, leather belts, boots and bags will continue with the 70’s inspired theme. If your overall look is glam, incorporate sleek and polished leather pieces to finalize your outfit. If your look is more bohemian, your leather items can have a more broken-in and weathered feel.

Fur and faux-fur is on trend as well! Check out another amazing photograph of Ali MacGraw, actress/model/fashion-icon of the 1970's and proof that that great style can transend time.

Gap's version of the fur hat (faux!) is sure to keep your ears toasty this winter!  It's available online and in stores now (I know because I almost bought it this weekend!).

Here's a fun and reasonably priced outerwear option for fall...with 70's swagger of course!

On the topic of classic coats and 70's icons, check out Jane Fonda in the detective movie "Klute" circa 1971. She sports her trench over a black mini-dress with belt and super high boots.

For those of us looking forward to warmer days, I have good news!  70’s inspired fashion was all over the Spring 2011 runways. I especially love the modern-retro looks featured by Derek Lam and Reem Acra.
