country strong

While home in Pennsylvania recently, I decided to practice my photography skills on a willing participant, my good friend Kyla! Lucky for me she is A) beautiful B) has modeling experience and C) has a kick-ass new hair cut! I styled her looks from pieces from my and her own wardrobe.

I chose "country strong" as the title of the post for various reasons - I wanted the vibe of the styling to come across as feminine but slightly tough as well as on-trend but with a down-on-the-farm feel. Oh, and my new obsession with the motion picture film of the same name (starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim McGraw, Leighton Meester and Garrett Hedlund) might have had a small influence as well. On a side note, honestly I can't believe this film had not-so-great reviews! So what if the storyline is a bit predictable... the good acting, and amazing songs and singing far outweigh a few cliches in the script. Also the chemistry between Meester and Hedlund is pretty sexy, download their duet Give In to Me or check them out singing together here to see what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAIEI1t8GeY

Due to my small town upbringing, denim and cowboy boots will always be an important staple in my wardrobe and I'm constantly looking for new and interesting ways to pair them with modern and vintage clothing. My favorite pairing from this shoot is definitely the denim chambray shirt with high waist tan shorts ($40 at H&M!) and pink headscarf...an outfit like this would be great for attending a barbecue in the suburbs or for an afternoon picnic in Central Park. If high-waisted shorts aren't for you, an easier pairing would be the same shirt over a floral dress - as a finishing touch, black leather biker boots keep the look from being too pretty or girly.

Whether you live in a big city like I do now or the middle of nowhere like where I grew up, I hope you can find some inspiration from my "country strong" photo shoot. Enjoy!

A special thanks to my dear friend Kyla - it was so much fun working with her and I am already brainstorming for future collaborations.

Until next time, stay country strong!
